The dynamic development of the availability of payment services and payment methods has been observed in Poland and all over the world. It has an impact on the households’ perception of their financial situation. The aim of the study presented in this article is to evaluate the impact of payment services’ availability on the households’ subjective assessment of their financial situation. According to the research hypothesis, the availability of payment services measured by the number of POS (point of sale) terminals and ATMs (automated teller machines) is a significant factor influencing the subjective assessment of households’ financial situation in addition to disposable income. In other words, households’ subjective assessment of their financial situation is also influenced by the accessibility of infrastructure that makes ‘exchanging’ income for goods and services possible. To verify this hypothesis, a synthetic indicator was constructed to represent the aggregated subjective financial situation. The study used secondary data obtained from the websites of Statistics Poland and the National Bank of Poland, and was carried out by means of a linear regression model on time series data from 2009 to 2023.
The results confirmed the research hypothesis. While disposable income and the density of the ATM and POS network proved to be statistically significant predictors, the impact of household savings turned out statistically insignificant. An optimal improvement of the availability of payment services by increasing the number of POS terminals influences households’ ability to spend their growing disposable income, and thus influences their subjective assessment of their financial situation.
