Sustainable development is an important concept lying at the heart of the European Union policies that presents challenges related to the simultaneous satisfaction of the environmental, economic and social needs. The aim of the study presented in the article is to identify differences and similarities among the EU-27 in the context of Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG 10), which focuses on inequalities within and between countries, migration and social inclusion. The analysis was based on data for the years 2010 and 2020 from the Eurostat SDG database. Subgroups of countries were determined by means of cluster analysis.
The results of the research attest to heterogeneity among the EU-27 regarding indicators related to reducing inequalities, and highlight disparities between the old and new member states. What is more, differences among new member states are brought to light, with Bulgaria and Romania being outliers in this group. The analysis also shows discrepancies that have evolved over time between the EU-27 countries of the North and West and those of the South and East. The results of the study indicate the need for further action towards reducing the inequalities. To achieve satisfactory outcome in the problematic areas, this activity should be tailored individually to each country.
